IMPROVING LIVES THROUGH TOURISM:
TOURISM AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS HELD AT GOROMANI AND WELVERDIEN
AREA.
THE DIRECTORATE:
Economic Development, Planning and Environment in conjunction
with Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency Planned and hosted
Tourism Awareness Campaigns as part of implementing the
resolutions of the local economic development summit which
identified tourism and agriculture as the key economic
drives of the Municipality.
The purpose
of the campaigns was to share information on opportunities
which exist within the tourism industry, particularly to
those communities living adjacent to the reserves. The
first campaign was held at Goromani (Phaphama Primary School)
on the 22 October 2008 and the second awareness at Welverdien
(Manchester United Sport Ground) on the 07th November
2008.
Both campaigns
were a success in terms of attendance. The Executive Mayor:
Cllr MJ Morema delivered key note addresses on both occasions.
The Executive Mayor emphasized that tourism is a key economic
drive in which people should take responsibility of creating
jobs for themselves and be entrepreneurs, “Tourism
has a role in halving poverty by 2014 and people should
not continue to blame government but should ask themselves
what they are doing to free themselves for the future of
Bushbuckridge lies in tourism”. He said.
Mr Sambo – Manager
for Tourism Development for MTPA explained that the Parks
Agency was more than willing to assist those that wish
to start businesses in the tourism industry. Both events
were honoured by the presence of the Traditional Authorities
of Hoxane and Mnisi with ward councilors of the respective
areas.
