Everyone has the right to clean and accessible water. In compliance with the constitutional provision, Bushbuckridge Local Municipality with the support of the National and Provincial Department of Water and Sanitation have been hard at work to solve huge water supply backlogs in Bushbuckridge. On Saturday the 13th of September 2014, Minister of Water and Sanitation honourable Nomvula Mokonyane accompanied by Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza, Executive Mayor for the Bushbuckridge municipality, Cllr Renias Khumalo and the Chairperson of the House of Traditional Leaders in Mpumalanga Province Kgoshi Mokoena launched Mathibela and Bhayizane water reticulation project. Rand Water was brought on board to assist. This project is envisaged to be completed by December 2015.
The Department of Water and Sanitation budgeted R1.14 Billion Rand for water reticulation projects. The Minister said, ‘to end long journey to fetch water, the department in collaboration with Local Municipality and Rand water will make sure that all residents have access to water and sanitation’.
The Minister urged community members not to vandalize government properties (water infrastructure). She also encouraged everyone to have vegetable gardens. Honourable Mokonyane alluded that working together we can move forward to speed service delivery. The event was attended by among others; sector departments, Bushbuckridge Local Municipality Mayoral Committee, Inkomati Water Catchment officials.
